Assessment of the Landfill Barrier System through Numerical Analysis: Rehabilitation and Expansion of Belgrade Landfill Case Study

There are still many unmanaged landfills around the world that pose significant potential environmental problems. One of largest in Europe, which has been used for more than 40 years to deposit waste from Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, is Vinča landfill. A revitalization and extension this landfill was proposed would allow its sustainable operation future. The project considered building a capping layer on surface current landfill, will close it serve as liner bottom new use composite system including HDPE geomembrane project. New settlements were predicted using FEM method utilizing Hardening-soil constitutive model subgrade. Both immediate subgrade caused by deposition primary consolidation settlement calculated. results show substantial increase can be expected during period, due high rate filling compared permeability total crown between 2.73 4.52 m. axial force not exceed tensile strength membrane at any time or after operation.
